How to get started in a career in law

The idea of having to visit court on an almost daily basis and argue cases in front of a judge does not appeal to everyone. Of course, it is also not the description of a day in the life of many lawyers.

But, if the concepts of the law and the idea of helping others resolve issues or defend their rights appeals to you then you may wish to consider a career in law.

The Traditional Route In

For many people law is a calling which starts at school. To become a lawyer you’ll need to study for a bachelor’s degree; no specific subject is required.

You can then pass a test to confirm your ability to attend law school. You’ll also have to choose the law school you wish to go to and complete an application for them.

You’ll then be in a position to earn a law degree which will allow you to practice law across the country. But, before you can start practicing law you need to complete a practical legal training course. This means working with a firm to ensure you have the experience you’ll require to work competently as a lawyer.

Only once you have completed these stages can you apply to be added to the roll of lawyers.

An Alternative Route

There is no escaping the fact that you need to complete the practical legal training and properly enroll before you can start practicing law.

However, it is possible to take a legal services course to enable you to get started in the field of law.

You will not be able to practice law in the courts but this qualification can get you a job as one of the following:

  • Paralegal
  • Legal secretary
  • Conveyancer
  • Legal Receptionist
  • Legal Assistant

This will give you the perfect placement to look into studying further and advancing your career in law.

Even if you have missed out on the traditional route there will be online and distance learning courses that can give you the knowledge, skills and qualification you need to become a lawyer. Of course, you’ll have the advantage that you already have a job in law and the support of your colleagues.

It is worth noting that the government may offer some funding to help you complete this entry level course. You’ll need to check with your local state or talk to the course provider in order to establish if you’re eligible.

Your Timescale

There is no definitive guide regarding how long it can or should take you to qualify as a lawyer. The online  course and real work experience is a great way to get a feel for practicing law and will help you to decide which field of law interests you the most.

But, that doesn’t mean you can’t change your mind in the future and study a different area of the law. This is one career that offers a world of potential and the opportunity to learn something new every day.
