Some of us know exactly what we want to be when we finish studying while some of us still have absolutely no idea of where our future lies. Whatever your feeling, if you find yourself veering closer to that graduation date, you’ll no doubt be bombarded with talk of your next steps.
Such conversations are great if you have a clear view of where you want to head and know precisely what steps to take next to get there. However, for a significant number of students, such talk can lead to negative thoughts and misguided feelings about what they should be doing in the coming months.
If you find yourself feeling anxious about not having a clear route planned to just walk into, now is the time to sit down calmly and assess your options.
Option #1: Continue with Further Education
The most natural step if you have been working towards an extensive industry qualification, some career paths will require you to continue on that study path and take on postgraduate study.
While there are some careers which demand this level of additional study, law, and psychology, for example, there are many which don’t require this certification, so you will need to ensure that your end goal after postgrad studies is going to pay off long-term for you here.
Alternatively, if your further education course is relatively short and will lead to an increased employment and earning potential, then it’s worth having a further look at such avenues, particularly if such studying can be done in the evenings or weekends for example.
Option #2: Get a Job
Perhaps one of the simpler of options, getting a job after studying is a more popular choice among many successful students, especially those wishing to start earning a good income.
If you aren’t sure at this stage where your best career placement may be, this is the time to look at taking on internships whereby you can get an idea of working in the real world, without having to make too much of a commitment at this stage. Consider temping or part-time if you need further time to think your career goals out here.
Option #3: Undertake Some Vocational Training
Some students find that they severely lack in industry-recognized qualifications and indeed experience when they leave the comfort of higher education.
If you have spent the last three years or so studying your hardest for your finals, chances are you won’t have felt able to take on work as a volunteer nor an internship, because of time constraints. This is the dilemma that many students must contend with and often leads to most forgoing any kind of work during their study years.
The key here is not to be disheartened as several careers require their candidates to take on additional training to be prepared for their role, including those who may have been working for many years before.
