Teen superheroes are a topic of continual fascination to viewing audiences. People love the complexity of young people learning to adapt and make the best use of their recently acquired superpowers. Add in the trauma of high school and peer pressure and you’ve got a drama most people can relate to.
People also love a hero and hate the injustice often seen in the world. Watching likable characters with obvious flaws righting wrongs is both fascinating and satisfying. Add in the complexities of well-meaning adults who end up blocking the cause of justice and you can’t stop watching.
DC’s Stargirl and Teen Angst
Such is the case in DC’s Stargirl written by Geoff Johns. The drama focuses on Courtney Whitmore (ably performed by Brec Bassinger) who has a lot on her plate, balancing the struggles of high school with learning how to responsibly handle her newly acquired superpowers. She lives with her mom Barbara (Amy Smart) as well as her newly-acquired stepdad Pat (Luke Wilson) and his son Mike (Trae Romano). That’d be enough for any teen to handle, but Stargirl must also battle villains and high school bullies without blowing up too many cars. Challenges like these are what make the series irresistible.
DC’s Stargirl Season 2 and Summer School
Season 2 also brought gripping and terrifying challenges. The entrance of supervillain Eclipso, who was a life essence trapped in a black diamond, is the stuff of nightmares and scarier than any horror flick. Battling Eclipso will take not only Stargirl but a host of her superhero friends and foes to defeat him. In Season 2, viewers meet some great ones. There’s Green Lantern’s daughter Jade (Ysa Penarejo) and Jakeem Thunder who discovers a pink pen on his desk that unleashes Thunderbolt, a 5th-dimensional genie voiced by comedian Jim Gaffigan.
To battle Eclipso these warring superheroes had to unite to make sure Eclipso doesn’t merge Shadowlands with the real world. It was an epic battle leaving viewers hungry for more.
DC’s Stargirl Season 3 and Frenemies
Expect mysteries to be solved and more epic struggles between our teen heroes and budding villains in Stargirl Season 3. Actress Amy Smart hints that Season 3 will be a thrilling whodunnit and the characters will doubtless continue exploring the past of the Justice Society of America.
Those who enjoy watching budding superheroes battle evil while dealing with teen angst will find that DC’s Stargirl is the thrill ride they’ve been waiting for.
