Kawasaki Ninja 650: The Kawasaki that everyone wants

Initially, Bajaj and Kawasaki kept enthusiasts waiting for a long time for the 650. But the 2012 model eventually made it to our shores and brought a lot to the table in terms of performance. The number of middle-weight motorcycles entering the market are full and plenty with buyers being spoiled for choice. A bike like the Ninja 650 brings with it performance, comfort and economy too. Such a motorcycle is sure to lure customers.

Engine

Packed neatly within the frame is a 649cc, twin-cylinder engine that produces 67.20bhp and 65.70Nm of torque. The motor is liquid-cooled and comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Kawasaki Ninja 650 is BSVI-compliant.

Specifications

The Ninja 650 looks aggressively styled, and is very different from the bike it replaces. From the front, you will notice a sharp nose with stylish split headlights incorporated. It sports a huge visor too and the sporty fairing gets ‘650’ graphics on it. The indicators sit flush with the fairing. The tank is nice and muscular and the underbelly exhaust is neatly tucked away. The up-swept tail section looks cool with those well contoured seats. The fully digital instrument cluster shows the tachometer, speedometer, fuel level, gear position, distance covered, time and the mileage. Fit and finish of the switchgear is impressive. In terms of dimensions, the Ninja 650 is 2055mm in length, 739mm in width and 1135mm in height. Like all Kawasaki engines, the motor is ultra smooth and refined. At the low speeds, it rumbles a bit, but when you whack the throttle open, it screams. It has a good mid-range and is great to use on the highways. Vibrations are kept at bay, but when the engine is stressed on, you do feel some vibrations. It can manage a top speed of 202kph. The gearshifts are smooth and the clutch is light. At 193kgs, the bike’s weight is manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 130mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1410mm and a seat height of 790mm.

Mileage

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 has a fuel tank capacity of 15 litres. In terms of mileage, the bike is capable of returning 21kmpl by ARAI, in BSVI guise.

Mechanical Parts

The seating position is rather aggressive on the Ninja 650. The narrow handlebar feels good to hold though. The foot pegs are well positioned and make for a comfortable seating posture. It allows you to be in total control of the bike. The rear view mirrors are positioned well. The split seat is surprisingly comfortable for both – the rider and the pillion. There are no grab-handles for the pillion though. The bike feels very stable at high speeds and ride quality leaves nothing to complain about. The bike loves leaning in to corners. The handlebar is very responsive too. It handles really well, thanks to the low centre of gravity. Braking is good as well. It can manage a top speed of 212kph. At the front, the bike rides on hydraulic telescopic forks, while the rear gets a horizontal back link with adjustable spring. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a trellis, high-tensile steel frame. The Ninja 650 runs on 120/70×17 tyres at the front and 160/60×17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.

The bike comes loaded with a slew of features like a fully digital instrument cluster, ABS, digital trip meter, pass light switch, alloy wheels, LED tail light, engine kill switch and a pillion’s seat.
