Oktoberfest 2018 in Munich: What you need to know

One of the most popular festivals in the world is being held every year in Munich, Germany. This festival is known around the world as Oktoberfest and it’s made up of a beer festival and traveling funfair festival. It is spread out on a period of 16 to 18 days and it’s being held between 22 September and 7 October-a great celebration for the Bavarian culture. If you want to experience great moments in this festival, here’s our Oktoberfest 2018 guide, which contains everything you need to know. Check out what you should expect from this celebration:

  1. Getting to Munich

If you are going to Oktoberfest from another country, it’s best to go by plane and not by car, as the journey is very long and the city is also very crowded in that period. You need to book your plane tickets at least a couple of months before the festival to avoid the high prices. Airport transfers to Munich are possible, so just search for the option that benefits you the most.

  1. Getting from the airport to the festival

If you come by plane, you will land at Airport Franz-Josef-Strauss- 20 km from the city. There are a couple of ways in which you can get to the city: you can rent a car, but that could be troublesome, as the city is so crowded; you can take the train, which has stops right in the city centre; or the bus made available by Lufthansa. The final and fastest option (if the traffic allows it) is the taxi. Munich airport taxis are available at both terminals of the airport.

  1. Booking hotels

Getting a place to stay can be difficult during this period, so you should book a couple of months in advance. If the hotels are full, you might want to try other options: camping or staying in with the locals.

  1. Safety at the festival

Hundreds of thousands of people attend the festival every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the crowds. Objects and bags can be lost or stolen so always keep money, key and important objects on your person and not in bags. Be cautious of people, as it’s a festival where alcohol is served and you might be caught in violence acts without even realizing it.

  1. Getting around Munich during the festival

The city is extremely crowded during the festival, so avoid using a car to get around the city. Public transport is your best friend and it can get you anywhere in the city. Taxis can be pretty expensive in the city during that time, therefore you might want to avoid using them as well.

Remember that Oktoberfest is all about having fun and enjoy high quality German beer and traditions. Enjoy everything the festival has to offer and try to soak as much as you can, but don’t overdue yourself on alcohol. With these tips in your mind, you’re all set to enjoy every moment of this wonderful festival.
